Darren made an unplanned return to solo performing at the 2nd Annual Shelterbox Benefit concert. Originally booked as a member of the shows "house" blues band, the other members of the band variously took ill and became unavailable leaving Darren to play an impromptu solo set! No suprises due to it's unplanned nature, but the set was notable for a few reasons, largely because it was an electric set and featured some slightly different performances compared to the acoustic versions, and it was the first ever live outing for Darren's new "Space Invaders" telecaster! This could also end up being one of the only solo shows Darren plays this year!

Darren's final solo show of the year was in the same venue as the first one, Gaslights in Redruth. The show was again opened by the brilliant Gareth Bartlett, but both Gareth and Darren were beset by technical failures and string breaks throughout the evening. Darren's set was drastically shortened as a result, with 9 songs from the planned setlist being dropped.
However, there were still lots of rare picks at this show, notably only the third ever performance of Peering Through The Bars' opening song "Run Back To", and the first ever performance of a new song, "Humanity". Covers "Terrapin" "Yoshimi.." and "You Never Arrived" all returned after long absenses, and Darren played the first verse of the Elliott Smith song "Miss Misery", a song he recorded a cover of years ago but has never performed live. The ongoing technical problems forced the song to be aborted, but a rousing finale of "Ticket To Ride" ensured Darren's final solo show for the forseeable future ended on a high note.

Darren's 3rd appearance at Jacob's Ladder in just over a year was arguably the best.
The show was opened by an absolutely cracking set from long time musical friend Gareth Bartlett, marking his first full solo appearance! It was a great performance and massive thanks to Gareth, be sure to check in with his website and see what he's up to.
Darren had a few concerns about this gig before hand due to struggling with flu, and not being on stage for a little while, but a wonderful atmosphere in the audience and a strong setlist soon put these worries to bed.
The set was notable for featuring a lot of new covers, and the first ever acoustic performance of "Take Me With You". That song has only been performed 3 times before, and always with the whole band. New song "Thanks For Listening" got it's first performance in front of an audience, after previously being debuted on Penwith Radio, and Floorjam's "Shrapnel" made it's first appearance since May.
New in the covers department were Seal's "Crazy", Morrissey's "Sister I'm A Poet", Syd Barrett's "Here I Go" which was dedicated to close friend and photographer Joel Stinton, "Cemetary Gates" from The Smiths, and Darren's own, dramatically different version of the Beatles classic "I Saw Her Standing There". There was also a bizarre medley of covers which Darren literally made up as he went along, including Porcupine Tree, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd!

This show, part of the Music Truro Festival, featured Darren performing in the street (yes, that does sound alot like busking doesn't it!) and Darren shared the bill with Gareth Bartlett of Blue Murder and Area 51 fame!
Setlist wise it was a fairly standard selection, with the exception of a second ever outing for part of the "Stickmen" suite, and a first performance of Paul McCartney's "Every Night".

Darren dropped into the Penwith Radio studio for a live set and lengthy interview with Kevin Godden. They chatted about all aspects of Darren's musical career, plans for the next album, playing live and also about his involvement in youth music projects, notably the Nancherrow Centre. Darren and Kevin got on very well, and the whole show had a really good vibe to it.
Performance wise, this was a return to form after the disappointing Helstonbury set. After a winning performance of "Wrapped Up In Yourself" Darren debuted a brand new song, entitled "Thanks For Listening" which was written about the dubious experience he had at the afformentioned festival, and confirmed that the track will be included on the next album! He finished with fan favourite "Shoreline" which has become a live staple in 2010.
Darren had a fantastic time and would like to thank Kevin and everyone at the station for having him!
The recordings of the live performances from the show will hopefully be online soon, and remember to keep listening to Penwith Radio at http://www.penwithradio.co.uk/

Darren battled his way through a difficult set at the 10th Helstonbury Festival. This was the 4th year in a row Darren has performed at the festival, but the first as a solo artist having previously performed with Got Birdflu and Stopsigns.
The set was rife with technical problems, guitar failures and overcrowding, but there were still a few notable high points, such as a first ever performances of the Howard Jones track "Things Can Only Get Better" and John Mayer's "In Repair", and long time collaborator and friend Sam Shainberg joined Darren for the second part of the set. The intro to "One Night Soon" was aborted several times after Darren's guitar gave up on him, only to be rescued at the death by a rousing solo from Darren that had the audience on their feet, where they remained for the customary request of "Trains".

This was the last show of Darren's short acoustic tour, and was recorded for a possible live album. Unfortunately, the recording was mistakenly erased shortly after the conclusion of the show, and so currently it appears that said live album will be delayed until the time comes that we can record another show!
The show was opened by a brilliant set from Brandon Reynolds, and also featured a cracking set from Beth Chapman in between Darren's 2 sets. Both support acts were fantastic and went down really well with the impressively large and loud audience!
Darren was joined on stage by violinist Dave Sugarbeet (www.davesugarbeet.co.uk) for several songs, and Dave brought a whole new dimension to the music, in particular new song "Don't You (Anymore)". There were second ever live performances of "Think For Yourself" and "Followed By Your Shadow", a 3rd ever performance of "The One I Find" and Stopsigns favourite "On The Side" made an appearance. A short section from Led Zeppelin's "Carouselambra" found its way into "The Frost Forms", and Gareth Willey again joined Darren for "Like A Stone".

Darren's return to Jacob's Ladder featured a slightly shorter set than at recent shows, due to having a support act! James Townsend opened the show with a cracking batch of covers, in what was his debut solo performance! Massive thanks to James.
Darren's set was mainly made up of the songs he's had in rotation at the other gigs so far this year, but did have a few special selections! "Think For Yourself" was performed for the first time ever, despite being written in 2007 and originally slated for inclusion on Tipping The Bridge! Darren's forthcoming 40 minute long concept piece "Stickmen" got it's first ever public airing tonight aswel, in the shape of the last 6 minutes of the piece subtitled "Melting Candles". Darren also debuted a medley of Led Zeppelin songs in what he introduced as his "Underrated Led Zep Songs Medley", and long time friend and collaborator Gareth Willey joined Darren for a performance of "Like A Stone".

Darren's first show of 2010 was the longest solo set of his career so far, with 33 songs over a whopping 2 and a quarter hours! Lots of new songs we're played at this show, with debuts for "Friends Forever", "I Know" and "Don't You (Anymore)", and second outings for "Peace At Last" and "When I Go, Take Me Quickly". Also getting second plays were "The One I Find", "You Won't Turn Up Here" and "One Night Soon". Floorjam's "Shrapnel" made a reappearance in the set after a year off, and of the 14 covers notable inclusions were the now customary request of "Trains", and "Fat Old Sun", which Darren last performed at the very first Floorjam gig in 2002!!

This solo acoustic set was the second of two consecutive shows with Tony Haven, and featured a much more familiar setlist after the previous nights rarities. This was only the second time that "Dreamland" was played live, and the second time "Borrow" appeared in an acoustic set.

"Normal" and "Pure Narcotic" were covered by Darren for the first time ever, along with "Last Chance..." which has become a regular in the set.  "Oh My Dear" was played for the first time since 20th May 2007, "Now That I'm Drowning" for the first time in 12 months and "Stay Down" returned after a few months absence. The biggest suprises however were at the end of the set, with a debut acoustic performance of "Consigned To Yesterday", and the first ever live performance of "You Won't Turn Up Here" which was sung by Darren himself (on the album this song was sung by Naomi James). Every song from Darren's 2 albums have now been performed live atleast once!

The closing track from that album, it has been rehearsed and pencilled in for shows numerous times but never performed as Darren was unhappy with how it was sounding, until now. The song was one of the best received of the night, and now leaves just "You Won't Turn Up Here", also from Tipping The Bridge to be played before every song from both albums has been performed live!

The launch party for Darren's second album Peering Through The Bars was a huge success! The new album was available to buy for the first time, aswel as last year's Tipping The Bridge and t-shirts featuring the new album cover, and also coincided with the launch of the album for download on the iTunes music store.
The performance side of the show was opened by Naomi James who played a short acoustic set and set the mood for a brilliant evening. The band for this show featured Darren with Sam Shainberg (bass), Naomi James (vocals), Chris Mueller (keyboards and acoustic guitar), Martin Newbury (drums) and making his debut with the band was James Townsend on guitar.
The performance itself featured the first ever performances of "Fication de los Satis", "One Night Soon" and a barnstorming "Consigned To Yesterday", meaning that every song from PTTB has now been performed live. There were also the first live full band performances of "Run Back To", "Shoreline" and "Clouded Tears", which featured guest vocals from co-writer Gareth Willey.
Darren played a short 2 song acoustic set in the middle of the show, which featured a poignant performance of "Followed By Your Shadow". The song was featured on Darren's debut album Tipping The Bridge, and is a tribute to his good friend Steven Ford who was murdered. Darren has never performed the song live before.
The assembled guests were a fantastic audience to play to, and Darren would like to thank everyone who was there for making it such an unforgettable night, especially the band, and Tim and Grant for sorting everything out so wonderfully!
